HBO Max Picks Up Horror Movie We're All Going To World's Fair

HBO Max, along with distributor and sales firm Utopia, has acquired the nationwide film distribution rights for We’re All Going to the World’s Fair. The horror drama had its world premiere at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival back in January, and news of the recent acquisition was first reported by Deadline.

We’re All Going to the World’s Fair is a 96-minute film about an isolated teenager named Casey who, from her attic bedroom, one night “finally decide[s] to take the World’s Fair Challenge, an online role-playing horror game, and embrace the uncertainty it promises. After the initiation, she documents the changes that may or may not be happening to her, adding her experiences to the shuffle of online clips available for the world to see.” The film stars Anna Cobb as Casey, Michael J. Rogers as JLB, and a number of performers in staged YouTube and other videos–the film explores “themes of identity and isolation while skillfully building in online wormholes and creepypasta.”

The movie, which will have its New York premiere later this month at the New Directors/New Films festival, is the narrative feature debut of writer-director Jane Schoenbrun. Via Utopia, the film will land in United States theaters early next year and later internationally. HBO Max has United States streaming rights, but no release date has yet been announced.

If We’re All Going to the World’s Fair has piqued your curiosity, you can also check out what horror offerings are on the horizon this month on Shudder. If you don’t yet have HBO Max, you can similarly take a look at what’s hitting that streaming service throughout May as well.
