Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Co-Director Wants The Game On More Platforms

In recent years, Final Fantasy games have eventually found their way to players outside the PlayStation-sphere. Final Fantasy 15 was ported to Xbox and PC and 16 was just released on PC this past September, but Final Fantasy Remake and Rebirth have yet to make it Xbox–something co-director Naoki Hamaguchi wants to remedy.

Talking to GamesRadar, Hamaguchi expressed the desire to bring the Final Fantasy Remake series to as many fans as possible as well as the change the industry needs to face by bringing games to a lot more platforms. As a self-described Xbox fan, Hamaguchi wants to see more of that.

“In terms of Final Fantasy 7, there’s nothing really we can say at the moment, but certainly I do want to bring Final Fantasy 7 and the Remake series to as many players out there as possible,” he said, despite not having any sort of power over the decision. “So we want to create that situation, that environment, where more players can play the games in the future, and we want to look in that direction.”

It seems that Square-Enix wants to get the ball rolling with more multiplatform play. Over the summer, Square Enix’s Octopath Traveler 2 finally arrived on Xbox over a year after launching on PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC.

“I think this goes beyond Final Fantasy 7. It really is a change in the industry, and I think certainly we’re feeling right now that the industry has changed in terms of there being so many different platforms and environments that people play games on these days,” Hamaguchi continued. “It’s so much more diversified now, so I think that’s that’s probably why our CEO, Mr. [Takashi] Kiryu, made that decision to move more in the direction of multiplatform–that’s just the way that the industry is going.”

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is nominated for several awards at The Game Awards 2024, including Game of the Year.
